Those who disagree with the notion that Public Relations is dying might have a rethink after reading these excerpts from three renowned professionals:

  1. Grant Cardone

Cardone is an American motivational speaker, a real estate investor and author. His article ‘Why PR Firms Are Dead To Me‘ explains why celebs think handling their own PR works better rather than hiring a professional.

When the live streams of Periscope, Meerkat, Blab, Facebook Mentions and the likes became available PR firms just became even more dead to me. I literally have taken over Meerkat, as I’m their #1 broadcaster in the entire world with over 380 streams in a period of 120 days. No PR firm could have done that for me because they refuse to embrace technology, still waiting for GMA and the Today Show to call me. Hell, they believe sending an email and leaving a message to the producer of the network that they once had a drink with is pitching their client to the network.

  1. Robert Phillips

Phillips is a strategy consultant, writer, co-founder of Jericho Chambers and a Visiting Professor at Cass Business School, London. In his popular book ‘Trust Me, PR Is Dead’, the former president and CEO, EMEA, of Edelman notes that public relations has fuelled the hedonistic treadmill of consumption.

People are being persuaded to spend money we don’t have, on things we don’t need, to create impressions that won’t last, on people we don’t care about.

Ayeni Adekunle is the founder and CEO of BHM Group. The former journalist’s article ‘PR Is Dead’ explains the situation of PR in Nigeria and in the global scene:

PR is rarely in the room when management is planning or when the government is strategizing. When we do get called, it is often for traditional media relations or to ‘manage’ press events.

#PRisDead is a smart conversation that everyone should engage in. A plethora of phenomena have blurred public relations, and those with better understanding of the tools of technology and psychology are helping brands and governments solve problems in ways PR could never dare.

There is definitely a problem somewhere that needs fixing as soon as possible. Conversations from #PrisDead, #PRSummit and others are ensuring we understand these issues and begin the preparing for #TheFutureofPR.
